Cool Las Vegas Museums

Cool places to visit when it's HOT, HOT, HOT are Museums! There are doubters who claim Las Vegas is "void" of culture, loosely defined by Mr. Webster as "developing intellectual and moral faculties especially by education". Most of us would not argue the tie between education and the likes of the Smithsonian or Guggenheim Hermitage Museums!

The Atomic Testing Museum sports affiliation with the Smithsonian. Their excellent tour encompasses atomic testing at the Nevada Test Site between 1951 and 1992. Political affiliation aside, the Test Site is a part of Nevada History; these exhibits are carefully crafted and well worth your time. Admission is only $10 for adults, children under 6 are free. Ask about senior and military discounts. Located at 755 E. Flamingo on the Desert Research Institute Campus or call 794-05151 or visit www.atomictestingmuseum.org.

Guggenheim Hermitage Museum isn't far from the Atomic Testing Museum. Located in the Venetian Hotel, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, exhibits change bi-annually, drawing from The Guggenheim in New York and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. This experience offers a look at priceless art from around the world. Admission is $19.50 but be sure to ask for the locals discount. Check out the current exhibits either by phone, 414-2440, or at www.guggenheimlasvegas.org.

Bring your camera to create outrageously great memories up close and personal, well almost personal, with your favorite celebrity at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. This extraordinary wax museum showcases famous folks of interest for all ages from actors like Ben Affleck, Lucille Ball and Oprah to politicians, musicians and an interesting category called "others" from Bugsey Siegel to Simon Cowell, Wolfgang Puck, and sports figures - go Tiger! Oh yes, girls, George Clooney is available for close up pictures, and is looking great. Madame Tussauds Las Vegas is a fun, hands-on collection you are encouraged to touch and photograph. Also located in the Venetian Hotel, a current list of wax figures is online at www.mtvegas.com, or phone 862-7800. Admission is $22.95 with special senior and youth rates.

Aren't we fortunate to have world class cultural opportunities so close to home? More cool museums next time.
