MARVA SCOTT SALUTES DIANA ROSS
| ||||||||||||||||
One of the best vocal impressionists, and a great friend, has returned to Las Vegas for another couple of months. That's right gang, Marva Scott is once again lighting up the stage at the Imperial Palace with her tribute to The Supremes and, Ms. Diana Ross, in "Legends in Concert." Having logged more hours on a Las Vegas stage than most of her contemporaries, Ms. Scott possesses an unusual and passionate commitment to her craft seldom seen today. She is a performance artist with the ability to change her persona depending on who she is portraying: be it Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight or an uncanny Whoopi Goldberg. Ms. Scott also enrolled in The Strasberg Institute in New York to further her acting career, and studied voice with Seth Riggs in Los Angeles.
"As an actress, I like doing Legends and similar shows because they offer a smorgasbord of characters to explore," she said. "My favorite tribute is the person I'm doing at that time," Ms. Scott replied, when asked who her favorite impression is. "I'm enjoying the role of 'Diana.'" ![]() The many facets of the legendary entertainer makes Marva's job a very interesting one. "I get the benefit of instant feedback from a live audience," she added. "It's also a lot of fun to meet with the members of the audience after the show and observe their reactions. I gain a perspective that feeds the development of the character or characters that I'm saluting." Her one hour show, "An Evening with Diana Ross starring Marva Scott" has received rave reviews from Orlando, Florida, to New Orleans and Las Vegas. At one time during a remarkable career, Marva decided Europe and especially Paris would be her next stop. She spent 10 months in Paris as featured singer at the popular nitery, Aux Trois Malletz, where she caught the eye of an American producer from Atlantic City. Marva was quickly booked into a revue at Caesars Palace. |
In the last few years, Marva has starred as featured singer in various revues in Reno, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and most recently spent four months in Branson, Mo. for Legends in Concert, where she performed her celebrity tribute to Disco Diva, Donna Summer. When not working in Las Vegas for "Legends," Ms. Scott performs exclusively for Universal Studios in Orlando. Marva Scott, along with other celebrity impressionists perform twice nightly in the Imperial Palace Theater at 7:30 and 10:00 p.m., with the showroom closed Sunday. Attended the "TV Game Show Hall of Fame" induction ceremonies Saturday at the Las Vegas Hilton over on Paradise. It was quite interesting in a number of ways. First the inductees are worthy of the honor: Monty Hall (Let's Make a Deal), Hugh Downs (Concentration), Peter Marshall (Hollywood Squares) and Wink Martindale (Tic Tac Dough), A very special tribute was paid to the late Merv Griffin, who created a number of the more popular game shows (Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy among them). But, what was most interesting was the one man who should've been inducted and wasn't. That man was and is Mr. Bob Barker of "The Price is Right" fame. I'm sure that will be corrected by the group of historians who are helping to select the honorees. Following the induction ceremonies, we watched "The $250,000 Game Show Spectacular," with Bob Eubanks, Chuck Woolery and Jamie Farr as the game show hosts. This particular show (Saturday afternoon) had all three hosts on stage, rotating the various games that normally will be used during the daily afternoon shows. Prizes range from cash (usually about $100 up to $500) with a chance at the end to win the grand prize. The games are fun and the hosts are very good. I was informed that only one of the hosts will be on stage (in rotation) on any given day. The game will run Monday through Friday. Check with the Hilton Hotel on times and ticket prices.
