The turnout for the new art gallery, Gallery Las Vegas, was quite successful. Paige O'Hara's paintings were one of many highlights (especially her 'Belle'). My sculptures got looked at respectively, and I want to thank all those friends who took time to stop by on Sunday-especially Mrs. Vera Goulet, Jeanne Bavaro, Janice, Kelly Clinton and her husband, Clint Holmes.
Following the gathering at the gallery, we (Nancy, Vera and this writer) headed for the Bootlegger, where Maitre D extraordinaire Sean O'Grady had a table reserved for us, and where Ms. Clinton had a very special evening of entertainment planned. It was called "An Evening in Paso Robles," and starred composer / arranger / pianist Tommy Deering, Teddy Davey (a founding member of the Las Vegas Tenors), and Ms. Lorena Provencio.

Davey opened the show with a song written many years ago by Deering for Frank Sinatra, "A Little Bit Closer." This was followed by "You Make Me Feel So Young," an a cappella version of "A Nightingale Song in Berkley Square," and "That's Life." Bill Fayne (Clint Holmes' conductor and a member of the Las Vegas Tenors) took over the piano for Ms. Provencio, who did a wonderful "Quando Men Vo" from La Boheme.
Fayne stayed at the piano for Davey's return to the stage for "Not a Day Goes By" and "Only the Lonely."

Then it was time for the "Paso Robles" section of the show. The repertoire of songs were written and conceived by Tommy and his wife, Ginny, with additional lyrics by Dan Bradley. The title song was wonderfully presented by Teddy and Lorena, followed by Ms. Provencio's beautiful solo of "Coastal Breeze." Those songs were quickly followed by "Paolivo," "Wine Country Sky" and "Earthquake Zone."
The song I had been waiting to hear came next. All this music, by the way, was created in the Deering minds while vacationing in the wine country of California a few years ago. I had been informed that "Happy Hour on Highway 46," was especially memorial - since they did not really remember the drive. As the music started, Holmes was inspired to get up and do an impromptu rendition of words, to the wine inspired (the Deering's) rhythm - it was a classic moment at the Bootlegger.
Teddy was joined on stage by his Las Vegas Tenor buddy's, Fayne and Bobby Black. The three ended the evening with a fantastic "Danny Boy" and "You Raise Me Up."
In my opinion, these special events planned by Ms. Clinton are just that, very special. And the band this particular evening comprised of Deering on piano, Bob Sachs on stand-up bass, Davy Nathan at the keyboards and Tony DeAugustino on drums was exceptional.

STF Productions is presently shooting a documentary on local resident, singer, golfer and downright good guy, Don Cherry. This should be a great "doc," especially since Cherry either sang with the best or played golf with them. And the stories Don could tell would make for a 20 hour production - and then he wouldn't have told them all. I'm personally looking forward to watching it when completed...

Giovanna Sardelli is following in her famous dad's footsteps (Nelson), not as an entertainer, but as a director of an Off Broadway Production in a big way. The future director of a Broadway hit is right now directing "Animals out of Paper," which was commissioned through the Time Warner Commissioning Program at Second Stage, and is the first play to be produced through the program. That is quite an honor for Ms. Sardelli and the play's author, Rajiv Joseph. Just got word from a proud papa that the show has been extended another two weeks. Papa will be seeing the show next week...
Well, gang, that's about it for another week.
I'm outa here!
