The Cast, a non-profit organization founded a year ago by a group of celebrities, will hold a star-studded luncheon this Monday (July 7) in the showroom at its new home, The Greek Isle Hotel (formerly the Debbie Reynolds Hotel), to honor one of the finest entertainment groups to ever work a stage anywhere: The Treniers.
The first time I personally watched the group perform was back in the 60's at the old Sahara Hotel. I knew they were the best that first time I saw them. The group was comprised of twins, Claude and Cliff, their brother, Buddy and nephew Skip. They did things you wouldn't believe. Geeze that was a long time ago, but what a wonderful memory. They worked just about every showroom or lounge in America at least once. They entertained like there was no tomorrow: full speed ahead and with a great sense of timing. Their routines were not only musically great but were humorous too. A few of them had one habit they dearly loved: Playing Keno. When they were off stage you could find them in the Keno room and when on stage they played enough tickets to last the length of the show. And just by watching them you knew if they had a winning set or a losing set: It showed on their face, but not in the performance. Another great comedian had the same habit: Red Foxx.
The last time I saw them perform was at the Showboat Hotel (now the Castaways). Cliff and Buddy Trenier are no longer with us but their spirit continues with the remaining members in Claude and nephew Skip, who is 65. The group was formed in 1948 and Skip joined them in the 50's and thereby became its youngest Trenier. Chip no longer performs and Skip rarely travels to any out of town engagement. But in their heyday, believe me, this was a group other groups would come and study. They were and still are the best of the best! Incidentally, they'll be performing at the Sands Hotel in Atlantic City August 5 for two weeks, along with another great buddy, Freddie Bell.
The Cast has established itself as a community conscious group since it was founded a little over a year ago. It is comprised of entertainers, past and present, who feel they want to give back to those who gave so much to the community. If a member or non-member (all he had to be was an entertainer of some kind) is down and needs some help (financial or just a boost) the group will reach out and offer their help. They recently helped to pay for the funeral expenses of a fellow musician who died a homeless man. Funds raised from special luncheons such as this Monday's or evening fundraisers goes into a pot for one specific use: to help those who are in need. It's a wonderful endeavor by a group of very dedicated men and ladies who really do care! A lot of them are my friends. A few of them were my clients back in the good old days.
So once again let me remind you it's this Monday, July 7 in the showroom at the Greek Isle Hotel & Casino on Convention Center Drive. The Luncheon begins at noon and it'll be a grand affair you can be sure with plenty of entertainment. Tickets are priced at $20.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members. The box office number to call is (702) 737-5540.

The Las Vegas Motor Speedway has joined in the Amber Alert System; a system established to help located kidnapped victims, by allowing state law enforcement agencies to use its marquee during an alert. In these times, we all share concerns about the safety of children, Chris Powell, general manager of the speedway, said in a release. "While it's our hope that we never would need to activate an Amber Alert, the speedway wants to do everything in its power to assist in the safe return of any missing or abducted child."
Now I have a suggestion to toss out to the rest of the business people of our little town. I know marquees that have those large letters installed cannot be changed quickly. But many of the hotels on the strip and elsewhere in our village, have electronic billboards and signs facing in every direction. In the case of an Amber Alert what would it hurt to turn those over to the system for special announcements regarding the missing child? If a person has taken a child and saw a picture of the child or description flashing in his face while driving or walking along the strip, what do you think he or she would do? Let the kid go, that's what! I have absolutely no idea what the cost would be or how complicated it would be, but I do believe it could be done and would be of great help.
