As promised a few weeks ago, the next time the "Shades of Sinatra" show was at the Bootlegger Bistro I would be attending. Well, Sunday evening (June 17) a group of us descended on the club to see and hear some great Frank Sinatra music. And, gang, let me tell you right up front - it was wonderful.
To begin with, the producer of the show, Ms. Kelly Clinton, knows her music and what people like to hear or see. Over time, Clinton had seen the three guys (who now make up the group) performing in other venues, but never together. She talked Ryan Baker (who was doing a lot of corporate work and private parties,) Larry Liso (who had a long run at the Westin), and Carmine Mandia, who was portraying "The Man" in the Greek Isles Rat Pack tribute show, to come together as a trio singing Frank Sinatra's music. So, in 2005 they made their debut at the Stirling Club at Turnberry Place in our Village, and the three have been doing special gigs ever since. They were recently joined by Lisa Smith who has managed to bring more humor (if that was possible with these three guys) and of course a bit of sexual tension to the act...
"Shades of Sinatra" runs a tight 90 minutes and is literally a tribute to one of the finest saloon singers to ever hit a stage anywhere. "The Man" would have been proud of what these four fine entertainers have done. There are a total of 33 songs performed beautifully in those 90 minutes, with lots of jokes and patter between. The show starts off with the three guys on stage singing "I'm Gonna Live 'Till I Die," followed with "That's Life." Baker solos on "I've Got the World on a String" which is followed by Carmine singing "The Song is You." Lisa joins up with Liso to perform a wonderful "Come Rain or Come Shine," and leaves the stage so Larry can continue on with "The Way You Look Tonight."
The guys and Lisa switch on and off stage, singing hit after hit and medley's filled with the songs you came to hear. I could go on and on naming the songs, but let me say when the four close out the show with "My Way" and "New York, New York" you simply want more.
The four super singers will be performing, beginning Monday, July 9th and every Monday thereafter in July, at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino Showroom. For showtimes and tickets call (702)636-7075. This is a show for all ages!
Went to a party at Pure nightclub the other night. For those of you wondering where Pure is located, it's inside Caesars Palace and is really a neat club. Hosting the special party was a magazine this writer once wrote for, "What's On," formerly created and owned by the Hertz family. Well the new owners have really made some big moves, including moving the office and everything to do with the publication. They have totally redesigned the magazine and it really looks neat.

When I was growing up in Los Angeles, one of my first encounters with a cigar box was when my dad made a crystal radio using a cigar box. At that time whoever thought that a cigar box would one day be worth thousands of bucks? My dad and, later when I was in my teens, I used to have a stack of the boxes in the garage with all kinds of nuts, bolts, etc. Well, I wish I had some of those boxes today. The reason? What we (media and invited guests) saw at the unveiling of "Timeless Treasures" as presented by Classic Art at JW Marriott the other evening...
Classic Cigar Art, poised to become the nation's leading retailer of framed original cigar label artwork, has established its headquarters in our little village (Las Vegas). It's an Internet-based retailer that has just completed its state-of-the-art Web site, ClassicCigarArt.com. The company specializes in the sale of framed, mint-condition cigar labels dating from the 1850s to the 1930s. All of the pieces are original lithographs printed as marketing tools during the golden age of cigar smoking. These miniature masterpieces were produced on a high-quality, acid free paper that retains their vibrant colors a century after printing. Many are even embossed with 22-karat gold.
The labels, incidentally, were designed to be posted on the outside and inside of cigar boxes-one of the earliest examples of in-store advertising. The original images seen on the cigar labels were hand drawn and etched into a series of Bavarian limestone slabs. Some labels required as many as 30 stones, one to apply each color, and each stone could weigh up to 600 pounds. The labels were embossed and printed in an expensive and time-consuming process that simply isn't attempted anymore. The stones, naturally, were abandoned when the process became obsolete. So if you're thinking you would like to own one of these masterpieces, check out the Classic Cigar Web site. Prices range from a couple hundred to a couple thousand. They are truly beautiful.
