VEGAS LIVE

Well, gang, I assume everyone had one heck of a good time the other evening. I had an early dinner then found my way home (sober) and settled down to watch all the "crazies" on the strip celebrate the New Year. As you know this column is actually written in advance, so I am presuming that everything went as planned. Anyhow, I hope that 2004 brings you all that you wished for and more.

Let me tell you about a fairly new television show you may, or may not, know about. "Vegas Live" stars singers Clint Holmes and Sheena Easton on channel 1 and 19 live at 9 a.m. with an immediate repeat at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday. I think Clint is a wonderfully talented man both in his theatre at Harrah's and in this new adventure. We are also friends! I definitely like the way he interviews: he doesn't pretend to know somebody if he is in fact meeting the person for the first time. He asks questions you or I would ask and he allows the guest to be him or herself. Sheena has been traveling the world for most of December, so I don't really have a take on her yet. One of the best guests hosts he had, however, was Brenda Holmes (his wife). I just thought she was terrific and so natural.

But, the one I truly think is fantastic is a whacky, beautiful redhead named Kelly Clinton. Her contributions to "Vegas Live" are without question the perfect balance between Clint and the guest host (replacing Sheena). She has a talent for comedy that is unbelievable. Every morning Kelly has a segment where she somehow finds these strange little news items that have happened around the world. As she reads these tidbits, she adds her own ad-lib (along with a certain look or grin depending on the story), which cracks her up along with everyone else in the studio. Clint and the producers have a real jewel in Kelly. When the pair visits some place in town with a camera crew (they go to various locations at least once a week) you can be sure Kelly will make it hilariously funny. I have not personally visited the "Bootlegger" restaurant on a Monday night, but I understand the weekly Karaoke night is very entertaining with Kelly as hostess. Kelly is, like Clint, a terrific singer in her own right and has been working forever in our little village. But I honestly think she should consider doing standup comedy: she's a natural!

Mac King, who headlines as a magician / comedian in the afternoons at Harrah's Las Vegas Casino & Hotel, will try it again this Tuesday, Jan 6th. He got rained out the last time he tried to set a Guinness World Record for the longest game of telephone, whatever that really means. As I understand it the present record involved 564 participants and was established on March 19, 2003 in Dublin, Ireland. King will predict the final whisper prior to the event, which will be sealed and secured in a locked briefcase. Along with King the event will feature live entertainment and some surprise guests. Participants will be given special gifts ranging from free beverages, gift bags and some cash prizes. The event is open to the public and will take place at the Carnival Court with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and the first whisper and accompanying festivities kicking off at 11a.m. This should be a lot of fun!

THIS AND THAT QUICKLY: I'm personally looking forward to seeing Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band at the Riviera Hotel on Jan. 27 in the La Cage Theatre... Congratulations to Gina Michel, who performing as Shania Twain, won the most recent "Be A Legend" Karaoke contest held at the Imperial Palace. She's the wife of Rick Michel's, one of the best impressionists in the business today (he does a right-on Dean Martin). Gina joins first-time winner Lois Martin, who portrayed Whitney Houston... Haven't been there yet, but I understand Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville" is a big hit at the Flamingo Hotel. The tropical themed venue features live entertainment and distinctive cuisine. More on this later after the official Grand Opening on Jan. 22... The Tropicana Hotel is just one of many staging Super Bowl Parties on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. They will have two giant screens and the price of admission includes unlimited draft beer, soft drinks and stadium food... Joe Trammel continues to be one funny dude as the special guest star in "Crazy Girls" at the Riviera. His latest bit is rattling Saddam Hussein's gage, which gets a great response from the audience... John Joseph and his trusty guitar returns to Bob Kephart's Comedy Stop at the Tropicana Hotel Jan.5-11th along with John Barillaro and Bruce Smirnoff... The Cannery Casino will celebrate its first year on Jan. 3rd beginning at noon and lasting until 8 pm. The Cannery Girls will be serving free cake and champagne along with free anniversary T-Shirts to American Can Club members and there will be a Big Band Dance Party in the Club from 8 p.m. until midnight. Then on Thursday, Jan. 8th Stephen Christopher, an Elvis expert licensed by the estate, will be at the Cannery beginning at 7 pm. where he will stage "An Evening with Elvi," an Elvis karaoke contest. Then on Friday and Saturday Paul Casey will perform his special tribute show to Elvis. It's all in celebrating the 69th birthday of Elvis.

Well, gang, that's it for another week. I'm outa here!
