"Showgirls" and "Edwin C"

Having lived in our little town for a little over 36 years I have been very fortunate to see a lot of wonderful shows and to meet a some of the most beautiful showgirls who brought fame to the strip. The other night the Rio Hotel & Casino, along with producer Greg Thompson brought those great early days back into my memory bank as we sat in the Samba Theatre.

"Showgirls" is without question one of the best new dance revues produced in this town, by anyone, in years. Greg has even outdone his other famous revues. It is a fast paced thanks to the masterful choreography by long time partner, award winner Mistinquett. The costumes are absolutely beautiful and the lighting is fantastic, as are the 12 female dancers who are just what the doctor ordered. They are the stars of the show, even though the headliner is International singing sensation Sunny.

Thompson, who has staged many successful shows nationwide over the years, has also been a collector of showbiz memorabilia. A lot of it had to do with costumes worn by some of the most famous showgirls in the world. From the famous Ziegfeld Girls to the ladies that graced the showrooms of Las Vegas he has collected it all. The exhibit outside the Samba theatre, which is free to the public, is literally a history of the showgirl genre. There are exotic costumes, playbills and stunning photos along with a brief history pertaining to a particular exhibit.

Sunny is a recording artist who has the uncanny ability to transform herself into other artists such as Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Modonna, Britney Spears and Joan Rivers. She does these striking comical vignettes between dance numbers as the hostess and it works wonderfully.

All I can tell you is this is a must see show if you like beautiful ladies dancing up a storm along with a fantastic singing star. The 60-minute show is scheduled nightly in the Samba Theatre at 11 pm., (dark Sunday) and tickets are reasonably priced. I must warn you however; this is not a kid's show!

Took a drive out to the Silverton Hotel & Casino the other night to see what all the fuss is about in its little showroom. I had been hearing a lot of good stuff on a guy by the name of Edwin Cook, who is better known as Edwin C of the late Cornell Gunter's Coasters. Well, I was not disappointed in what I saw and heard. Edwin has formed a very tight band and is in the process of coming out with an album of some original songs he has written over the years. But this particular night I sat through two sets listening to a master vocalist. His tribute set to "The Blues" is fantastic as is "Bo Jangles" and his tap dance tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr. Edwin sings them all. "Pride & Joy," "Shake Your Body," "All Night Long," "Lady," "Only You," "Yakkity Yak," "Love Potion #9" and "Stand By Me" are just a few of the great classics included in a set. No two shows are ever the same with this guy.

We highly recommend, should you be out one-night and you're south of our little town and want to be royally entertained, then stop at the Silverton and relax with Edwin C. I think you'll be glad you did!
