Las Vegas is known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World. " It certainly can also be called the "Comedy Capital of the World." Well known comics such as Robin Williams, Ray Romano, Louie Anderson, Howie Mandel, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, The Smothers Brothers, Carrot Top, Don Rickles, and Jackie Mason perform in Las Vegas several times a year. Las Vegas also has shows starring comics such as Amazing Johnathan (Golden Nugget), Mac King (Harrahs), Ronn Lucas (Rio), Fielding West (Bourbon Street), Justin Tranz (O'Shea's), and Rita Rudner (New York, New York) that are booked for an indefinite length of time. And, there are comedy clubs that change their line-ups weekly at The Tropicana, Harrahs, The Riviera, Palace Station, The Greek Isles, Lady luck, Casino Royale and The Excalibur.

Penn and Teller are appearing at 8:30 pm, in the Samba Theater at the Rio all-Suite Hotel & Casino through August 31st. The eccentric pair of comedy / magicians have been performing their hilarious brand of humor since 1975. With flying knives, jagged bottles, snipping scissors and a chopper, Penn and Teller perform tricks that are puzzles, if not mysteries. This unique partnership which serves as Visiting Scholars at MIT and lectures at the Smithsonian Institute and Oxford University, offer a show filled with dedicated showmanship as well as an intriguing intellectual challenge to audiences of all ages. Penn and Teller were named two of the funniest people alive in Entertainment Weekly's "50 Greatest Comedians Today," and should not be missed!

The Comedy Stop at the Tropicana has Louis Ramey in for the week. Every syllable of Ramey's smooth, smart, lightning-quick and almost pathologically clean comedy set has taken him everywhere. Joining him, for the week, are fellow comedy headliners Mike Donovan and one of Sam Kinison's "Comedy Outlaws" Mitchell Walters. Shows are at 8:00 (non-smoking) and 10:30 p.m., nightly.

Ronn Lucas, "the man who can make anything talk," is appearing in the Masquerade Showroom at the Rio at 3:00 pm. Lucas presents a mixture of comedy, improv and ventriloquism with a contemporary edge. Whatever object he uses, which is usually not the traditional puppet, he makes it talk! His astoundingly funny finale involves a live "dummy" he selects right from the audience.

Doesn't it seem that George Carlin has been around the comedy world forever? The 65-year-old comic's material is as new and hilarious as if he wrote it yesterday and he most likely did! Carlin doesn't let any grass grow under his feet or any topic he wants to talk about pass him by. No comic ever has been able to make the topic of suicide hysterically funny, but Carlin does! With twelve HBO specials, numerous CD's and several books to his credit, this man never stops working. He is most certainly not for the faint of heart but if you keep an open mind, your sides will be aching as you walk out of the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand. Opening the show is Dennis Blair, a comedy headliner in his own right, who brings an audience to just the right place for Carlin.

Talk to you next week! Until then, be sure to keep laughing because LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE for all that ails us!
