The seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist, Anita Baker, will present her smooth sounds of R&B, pop and jazz when she performs at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the first time in her career, Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50, $85, and $150 plus service charges, call 702-474-4000.
Baker released her debut album, "Rapture," in 1986 and her follow-up album, "Giving You the Best That I Got," won her two more Grammys and went double platinum in less than eight weeks.
Baker handled a greater share of the songwriting on her third album, "Composition," which was released in 1990 and featured a strong jazz influence. After the release of her fourth album, "Rhythm of Love," Baker took an eight year break from performing to raise a family. She made a glorious return to the concert stage in December 2002 and currently has six shows planned this December.
Producers David Saxe, who has the "V" show at the Venetian, and John Stuart have taken over the former Sevilla nightclub at the Aladdin's Desert Passage mall and opened a show called "Ovation." The room has been changed from a restaurant / nightclub into a theater with rows of seats.
The show features a live band, juggler Anthony Gatto, magician Jason Byrne, balance act Tino Ferreira, comedian Mark Kornhouser, the dance team All That and aerialists Cees & Kathy, who were part of Charo's "Bravo" revue that was formerly at Sevilla. Shows are at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $49, $59 and $69, with the latter being a dinner package with Lombardi's nearby in the mall.
For car lovers and hot rod enthusiasts, the new Hot Rod Grille located at the Hot Rod Hill auto plaza in Henderson is just the ticket, catering to car shows and special events including Rod Runs and Cruise-ins.
The two-story, 9,500-square-foot restaurant and gaming venue features an expansive menu and banquet facilities for up to 150 guests. It is open daily, 24 hours a day for breakfast, lunch, diner and late night meals and has an outside patio. The interior and exterior design theme highlights the letter "V," meaning "V-8," which is the favored engine size of all hot rodders.
Early Clover, which is his real name, is the lead vocalist of Cornell Gunter's Coasters at the Sahara sharing the stage with The Platters and Beary Hobbs' Drifters. On Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., he performs and hosts a jam session at Café Nicolle on West Sahara Ave. and Decatur Blvd.
Clover recently released his second CD, "Love Man." His first CD "You're Gonna Need a Backup" was released in 2002 and he's already working on a third album geared toward the blues and a fourth one focusing on gospel music.
The Stardust will be hosting the four-day annual Las Vegas Comedy Festival produced by Laughs Across America, Oct. 29 - Nov. 2. The entertainment / educational event will be jam packed with seminars, events, discussion groups and talent showcases. World Renowned wine artist, Thomas Arvid has been named as the artist-in-residence this year. The Hugh Hefner Suite was host to the recent 50th Anniversary of Playboy Magazine celebration in September 2003 and Hefner stayed in the newly dedicated suite. In his honor, the suite comes complete with Playboy memorabilia including a Playboy pinball machine, towels, blankets, pillows, glassware, artwork and more.
Mandalay Bay has changed the name of its new 1,122-suite hotel tower from "THE hotel at Mandalay Bay" to "THEhotel." That's right, the caps stay, but now the two words are run together. This revelation ought to be a challenge for journalists. The tower is expected to open before the end of the year. It will be marketed as a separate hotel and Alain Ducasse and Jeffrey Chodorow's MIX will be the restaurant at the top of the tower.

When the Westin Casuarina located at the site of the former Maxim Hotel just off the Strip opens this fall, it will be the first Westin hotel in Nevada, The resort owned and operated by Columbia Sussex, which operates more than 50 full-service properties in the U.S. and overseas, will have 825 guestrooms with its famous signature Heavenly Beds.
The Westin Casuarina has created five one night accommodation packages designed to appeal to a variety of visitors and provide a heavenly fantasy. It's true, FIRST FRIDAY is an ongoing arts, entertainment, and social block party being held the first Friday of each month in the Las Vegas Arts District. This monthly event is a showcase of local art and Las Vegas' vital Downtown cultural scene with visitors enjoying visual and performing artists, arts-oriented businesses, unique shops, bars and restaurants disbursed in the historic downtown neighborhood.
The Cannery located off I-15 in North Las Vegas at the corner of Craig and Losee roads will welcome the 18th Annual Red Riderz Turkey Run on Nov. 23. Motorcycle enthusiasts paying a $20 fee and participating in the Poker Run will have a chance at a $500. The festivities will be free to the public and John Earl and the Boogie Man Band will perform musical sets between noon and 6 p.m.
On Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the Cannery will host free performances by Black Diamond "The Ultimate Tribute to KISS" in The Club at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Black Diamond portrays the 1977 era of KISS by wearing the Love Gun costumes. Each band member portrays their childhood idol and has thoroughly studied their playing style, mannerisms, voices and even autographs.

Magician Lance Burton recently taped a week of shows for "Hollywood Squares" which will air the week of Dec. 1-5. Charo also appeared with Burton on the long-running TV game show and Martin Mull occupied the center square. Burton will be doing another week with "Hollywood Squares" in January to air in 2004.
What a spectacle when the Stratosphere's new X Scream thrill ride was recently heli-lifted 866 feet above Las Vegas Blvd. to be anchored in place atop the Stratosphere Tower. The sling-shot, teeter-totter-style ride will catapult riders to the Tower's edge, and catch them at the last second before plummeting. How apropos... X Scream is scheduled to debut on Halloween. Tickets prices are expected to range between $5 and $8.
Jay White, who is portraying Neil Diamond indefinitely at the Riviera, has perfected his imitation over the past 20 years. To his recent surprise, he is featured in Diamond's new boxed set "Stages." Consisting of a DVD and five CDs of the icon's music, "Stages" details his career to date. One brief segment on the DVD covers a meeting between Diamond and White that took place on Dec. 28, 2002 backstage at the MGM Grand before a concert.
A&E is rushing to put together a "Biography" episode on magicians Siegfried & Roy. Interviews are with Robin Leach, Steve Wynn and manager Bernie Yuman and others.
The rodeo fans favorite band Ricky & The Redstreaks is scheduled to work the National Finals Rodeo again this year at the Stardust from Dec. 4-14, beginning at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10.
William "Si" Redd, famous for creating the video poker machine and the Megabucks statewide network of gaming machines, founding International Game Technology (IGT), and formerly owning Si Redd's Oasis in Mesquite, Nev. has died at age 91.
A new Bravo series, "Celebrity Poker Showdown," shot four days inside the Palms' Key West Room and features some 25 celebrities playing Texas hold 'em with a contribution going to the winner's favorite charity. The show will first air on Dec. 2, just before the popular makeover show, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."
Also, the Palms' Ghostbar is providing the backdrop for the open and close of "A Life of Luxury," an ABC special hosted by Robin Leach of "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" fame.
