Clark's father played in a square dancing band and started him at a young age playing the banjo and mandolin and at age 14, he received his first guitar - a Sears Silvertone. Roy Clark joined Jimmy Dean and the Texas Wildcats in 1954. In 1960, his break came with an invitation to open for Wanda Jackson at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. After returning from a 345 night tour in 1962, Clark returned to Las Vegas as a headliner and also as a recording star. His album "The Lightning Fingers Of Roy Clark" was a smash success.

In 1969, Clark began his first television series, "Hee-Haw," co-starring with Buck Owens. Although the show was cancelled after two-and-a-half years, it was a hit that remained in syndication until 1992.
