The annual "Rockets Over The River" fireworks display will be held by the casinos twice over the river on Friday, July 4, and Sunday, July 6, at 9 p.m. Both shows are free. For information, call the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce 1-800-227-5245 or 702-298-2214.

The Riverside Resort's Poker Room, overlooking the Colorado River on the main casino floor, has announced new daily specials worth checking out. Call 702-298-2535 or 928-763-7070 for information.

In addition, the Riverside continues the $50,000 Bad Beat Jackpot, which is paid as follows on Texas Hold 'Em, 7-Card Stud and Omaha Hi/Low games: 50 percent of the Bad Beat Jackpot goes to the losing hand, 25 percent to the winning hand, and the remaining 25 percent is distributed to all active players in all games.

The Starbucks at the Golden Nugget is brand new. It opened a few weeks ago and offers signature fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, pastries and coffee-related accessories.

Tom & Sharon's Dance Practice Party will be held on Saturday, June 21, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. For details on the party, dance classes and upcoming events, call Tom and Sharon Craddock at 928-754-2097.

In an ambitious effort to create excitement, most casinos in Laughlin hold some sort of drawings or floor promotions giving away prizes varying from cash to merchandize. Usually entry tickets are earned through casino play. The following are examples of special June promotions. Many casinos also maintain ongoing programs for their slot club players.

The Flamingo has "Who Wants To Win $100, Grand?" running through June 30. This promotion is based loosely on the TV game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" Two games based on chance rather than general knowledge are played each day with five contestants at the Center Stage on the main casino floor at 1 and 6 p.m. Prizes range from $100,000 and $50,000 down to $100 cash, dinners for two, bonus points on Magic Club cards, and Comedy Stop show tickets.

The Colorado Belle has "The Big Easy $30,000 Giveaway" running through June 28. The top prize each week at the Saturday drawings held every hour from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Grand Staircase is $5,000. Other cash prizes are $2,000, $1,000 and $500.

At the Avi, this month's deal is the "June Jamboree Cash Giveaway" running through June 28. Again the drawings are held on Saturday at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. for cash ranging from $3,500 to $200.

The River Palms is holding "June Bugs Drawings." The prizes are two 2003 Volkswagen Beetles; one yellow and one green. Four names are electronically drawn at random at the Jackpot Island staging area in the casino each day at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. through June 30. The next step is the four contestants play a three-minute slot tournament to determine who qualifies to win one of the cars. The consolation prize is $20 for the three non-qualifying players.

The Edgewater is holding the "All-American Giveaway" through July 25.

Every Friday over $3,000 in cash and prizes are awarded at 7 p.m. near the One Club booth in the casino. The grand prize is a Yamaha WaveRunner XL1200 valued at more than $6,000.

Each person selected at the Edgewater's drawings pulls three American flags from a collection of flags. The numbers on the end of each flag coincide with numbers on a prize board.

The western-themed Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall is easily recognizable by the icon River Rick, towering nearly 100 feet above the Colorado River. Visitors arriving from every direction see River Rick looming above the town, waving a ten-gallon-hat sized "welcome." Rick's first cousin is Vegas Vic in Las Vegas.

River Rick and Vegas Vic may not know it, but this columnist saw one of their distant cousins in New Zealand.

Another distinct resort is the Ramada Express with its train-theme recalling the glory days of Victorian-era railroading. This property boasts a narrow-gauge passenger train that runs on a nearly mile long track and transports guests between the parking areas and main entrance. Old No. 7 provides free train rides daily around the property every 12 minutes.

The Colorado Belle provides Laughlin with another strong visual theme. The main building is built like a 608-foot long boat with 30-foot paddlewheels and 209-foot tall smokestacks. Guests get the feeling they are boarding a docked Mississippi riverboat when they cross gangplanks over a moat.

Harrah's Laughlin is nestled on a natural cove secluding it from the other main Strip resorts. It resembles a Mexican village inside and out and is best known for its private sandy beach.

The unassuming little Regency Casino, a longtime favorite with the locals, opened this year after being shut for about a year. The brother/sister gaming team who saved the property had to do a total renovation. The new adventure features dining, entertainment, karaoke nightly except Thursday, and gaming.
