SKYVUE SUPER WHEEL PLANNED FOR THE STRIP
Plans for the construction of The Skyvue Las Vegas Super Wheel, which will be a 500-foot observation wheel that is larger than the world-famous London Eye mega attraction, are being finalized. The first step is to clear the 11-acre site at Las Vegas Boulevard and Mandalay Bay Road. The Strip property currently houses a 1950s era motel that will be demolished to make way for the giant wheel and a mixed-use complex featuring a roller coaster and 200,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and entertainment venues.
The estimated $100 million project's wheel will have 40 heated and air-conditioned 20- to 25-passenger gondolas with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views. The gondolas will be available for private parties. The complex is projected to be completed during the first half of 2013.
The exterior of the wheel's adjoining complex will display more than 30,000 square feet of LED lighting and video. On the interior walls and ceilings, 7,000 square feet of video will entertain guests waiting to board the gondolas.
As an example of the potential draw, the London Eye has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in that city and is visited by more than 3.5 million people annually.
