Sunny Turner's Platters will headline at the Ramada Express in the Pavilion Theater, May 27 and 28. This quartet takes audiences on a nostalgic stroll through the Fifties with songs like "The Great Pretender," "My Prayer," "Harbor Lights," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Twilight Time." The juggling comedy team, On The Edge, featuring straight man Bert and oddball partner Howie will follow the Platters at the Ramada Express, June 3-8. This juggling duo has appeared with such celebrities as Mickey Rooney, Barry Manilow and John Byner. On The Edge recently finished a 40 city tour of Canada with "Illusions, a Magic Spectacular." The team also has done some television commercials, toured Australia and Japan, and worked on cruise ships. Tickets are $12.95 to see On The Edge.
The Rio Vista Outdoor Amphitheater has a strong lineup of male headliners in May beginning with crooner and songwriter Paul Anka on May 13-14. Tickets are $30 and $25. Glen Campbell follows with country music on May 22. Tickets are $20. Charlie Daniels will take over the stage for Memorial Day Weekend, on May 30. Tickets are $25, call 702-298-4600.
Daniels has added up more than 40 years in the music business and has played it all - rock, country, bluegrass, blues and gospel.
In 1970, Daniels formed his own self-titled group and joined the first wave of Southern rock bands. In 1979, he signed the most lucrative contract ever given to a Nashville act up to that time. It was reportedly worth $3 million. The Charlie Daniels Band earned their keep with their biggest hit, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia," that went Platinum. The song earned the band a Grammy Award and three Country Music Association trophies, became a cornerstone of the "Urban Cowboy" movie soundtrack and propelled Daniels' "Million Mile Reflections" album to Triple Platinum Status.
The next big citywide event, Laughlin River Days features the Professional Racing Outboard Performance Tour-Formula One boat racing! Lightweight tunnel boats will battle the Colorado River current at speeds in excess of 135 mph and vie for a share of a $40,000 purse. The events take place on the Colorado River at the base of Davis Dam.
