There are always many good reasons to visit Laughlin and Harrah's Laughlin has added one more positive lure. The soulful, high-energy Las Vegas performer Earl Turner is headlining at Harrah's for a six-month engagement through Sept. 17, and he's a "MUST SEE!" Having had the privilege of checking his show out myself, it's a "no brainer" to make this recommendation.

Turner and his multi-talented eight-member band are raising the roof in the Fiesta Showroom and transforming it into "Earl's House." He is a totally energizing performer who moves all around the entire showroom while taking the audience on a musical journey with a wide variety of tunes.

Turner's musically-gifted parents influenced their son's decision to become an entertainer. His father preferred to listen to gospel and country and western music so you can image the wide range of songs Turner likes to present.

Turner is electrifying the Fiesta Showroom at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and he doubles back for a 10 p.m. show on Saturday. Tickets are $19.95 without a Total Rewards Card and $17.95 with a card. You can't afford not to see him.

The Ramada Express is throwing a five-day Cinco de Mayo celebration. Victory Plaza will be "Fiesta Village" featuring a fiesta cart of cash and prizes, a slot tournament, and an all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet. The event can be topped off with a Margarita!

Highway Country Radio of Barstow, California has been selected to host the local portion of the "Colgate Country Showdown." This is the world's largest country music talent showcase. The Showdown will be held at the Western Dance Hall and Lounge at Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort on June 13, at 7 p.m.

Thousands of aspiring artists compete annually for the "Showdown" title. More than $200,000 in prizes and cash will be awarded nationwide. The Grand Prize of $100,000 will be awarded at the televised national finals.

Last year's contest in Laughlin attracted 76 applicants from four different states and ranging in ages from 11 to 63. The winner from this year's contest will advance to the Arizona State final on Sept. 21, where the prizes include $1,000 in cash and the opportunity to compete in one of the six regional contests in the fall. Winners of the regional level are flown, with all expenses paid, to Nashville, where they compete for the national title.

The "Colgate Country Showdown" is open to local and/or instrumental performers, individuals or groups with up to seven members, who have not performed on a record listed in the national record charts of "Billboard," "Radio and Record" or the "Gavin Report" within 18 months preceding local competition.

There is a $10 entry fee and all contestants must begin their competition by performing at showcases produced by participating country music radio stations. Highway Country Radio is taking entries through May 15. For information, call 702-737-9899 in Las Vegas.

The latest Thunderbird is a new take on the classic 1955-57 two-seat roadster. This slice of automotive history has been reinterpreted for a new era with the all-new 2002 Ford Thunderbird convertible. It features a reverse-wedge body shape, round lamps, chrome "egg crate" grille design, porthole windows, and a dramatic hood scoop.

For a look at this car or a chance at winning it, you'll find one on display at the Edgewater on a bank of nickel "Reel 'Em In" slot machines. Players can win the car by lining up three "Reel 'Em In" symbols with maximum coins bet.

The new Thunderbird bank of slots is one of many new additions to the Edgewater's slot options. The resort recently installed cutting-edge games with full stereo sound and bright, vivid animation. These new attractions are saturated with fun themes and titles like: Wild Cougar, Frequent Flyer, My Rich Uncle and the Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Some of these games can pay upwards of 200 times the original bet, and allow players to play 15 to 20 lines at one time. To give players even more options, they choose what denomination to play from five-cents to $1 per person.

Dining in the Orleans Room, which is a gourmet restaurant at the Colorado Belle, is an opportunity to step back into another era. The restaurant features a turn-of-the-century French Quarter decor and ambiance.

Guests of the Colorado Belle who check in Sunday through Thursday can dine in the Orleans Room at a discount. At check-in, guests receive a sealed envelope for use in the Orleans Room. Within the envelope is a certificate valid for anywhere from 10-percent to 100-percent off the dinner check. The catch is, the envelope must remain sealed until time to pay the dinner check. Guests give the waiter the unopened envelope when the bill is presented. The waiter opens it and reveals the discount amount at that time.
