Tickets to Van Halen's Aug. 7 concert date at the Mandalay Bay Events Center went on sale earlier this month at 10 a.m. and the show was sold out by 10:30 making it the fastest sell-out in the center's five-year history. Barry Manilow's only U.S. concert date scheduled for 2004 is slated for June 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Tickets are $45, $75 and $125, call 702-632-7580.
Sharon Haynes, producer at the Gold Coast Showroom since 1997, won three of the six "Best Show" awards in Entertainment Network's International competition in January 2004. The judges, Universal Studio's Executive Producers, voted for "Serendipity" and also gave accolades to her long running "Honky Tonk Angels."
"Serendipity" is open again at the Gold Coast and will run through May 30. This revue of the 60's, 70's and 80's presents favorite star tributes to Frankie Valli, Petula Clark, Sammy Davis Jr., Connie Francis, Linda Ronstadt, Davy Jones, Lucille Ball and more. Other highlights include Lori Legacy's version of "Sonny and Cher," Corrie Sachs' wild "Carol Burnett" plus the live Incognitos Band.
Haynes is stepping up her creative output with a new series of musical-comedy productions to rotate every three weeks beginning June 2. She will write and produce a wide variety of musical themes in a repertoire of country, pop, big band, comedy and dance productions.
The new series will lead off on June 2 with "Outlaws, Cowboys, and The Man In Black" featuring tributes to Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. A show schedule for the months to follow will soon be announced and will still include three-week rotations of "Honky Tonk Angels" and "Serendipity" in the line-up.

Comedy magician Mac King is expanding his impressively successful afternoon show at Harrah's from the 360-seat Improv comedy club to the larger Clint Holmes Theater 560-seat showroom for the peak-season months of May through September. The Mandalay Bay's Summer Beach Concert Series will open the resorts 11-acre beach and lagoon to the upcoming concert line-up this summer with more acts to be added: May 7, Spin Doctors and Gin Blossoms; June 4, Beach Boys; June 5, B-52's; June 19, Smashmouth; June 25, Counting Crows; July 23, Cindy Lauper; July 24, Go Go's; Aug. 13, Reggae Beach Party featuring Burning Spear; Sept. 3, Rick Springfield; and Sept. 4, REO Speedwagon.
Singer-saxophonist Tommy Alvarado launched a seven-week series of 8 p.m. Friday night poolside jazz concerts at the Stardust that will run through May 28. Alvarado is a former sideman and backup vocalist for Frankie Valli and Joe Cocker. The series is featuring prominent local and regional jazz artists and admission is free.
The Cannery in North Las Vegas at the corner of Craig and Losee roads will host Cars, Stars and Guitars, The 9th Annual Motorhead Festival and "Wing Thing" at the casino's indoor/outdoor venue on May 7 and 8.
There will be hundreds of customs, classics, trucks, bikes, boats, exotics, race and specialty vehicles on display in the outdoor festival grounds and west parking area along with car cruises and contests throughout the two-day event. Vendors' booths will specialize in after market auto parts and polishes.
Entertainment will be provided by John Earl & The Boogie Man Band from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Road Rockets from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Cars Stars and Guitars festival hours are noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free on Friday, $3 on Saturday, and free for children under 12 and seniors over 65.
The third annual Las Vegas Home Improvement and Decorating Show is set for three days, April 30-May 2, at Cashman Center. Produced by Thorsch Productions, the show is a virtual information center for every type of home improvement. The show capturing more than 15,000 attendees will highlight over 450 exhibitor booths, designer rooms, seminars and demonstrations, and show specials. The CineVegas Film Festival will return to the Palms and Brenden Theatres, June 11-19. Tickets for the festival will be available after May 24 at Brenden Theatres.
This year, Dennis Hopper will serve as Chairman of the Creative Advisory Board and have an active presence. The festival conceived in 1998 has become a star-studded event, which premieres the best in independent, foreign and mainstream films, shorts and documentaries. During the day, attendees see the films and enjoy panels hosted by celebrated writers, producers and filmmakers. At night, there are nine nights of sponsored events.
The Strip's 26-acre water theme park Wet 'n Wild will open on April 24 and in May will introduce a new ride called The Dragon. The two-person bowl slide will feature a two-person inner tube that shoots down a 45-foot drop through a fully enclosed flume and spins around a 35-foot bowl while a 9-foot mist-breathing dragon watches closely from above.
The Golden Nugget's new poker room is expected to open on April 20, just in time for when the World Series of Poker begins across Fremont Street at the recently reopened Horseshoe.
After 14 years at the Riviera, Lon Bronson's 13-piece band is relocating downtown to the Golden Nugget's third-floor showroom in May. The band will play at midnight on Saturdays and 10 p.m. on Mondays. The showroom will take on a lounge atmosphere with bars set up in the room.
After numerous announcements, the "X" show that was formerly at the Aladdin will not be opening at the Sahara.
Steve Dacri has pulled his afternoon "Xtreme Close-Up Magic" show from O'Shea's as previously announced. He's working on taking over the domed Lady Luck showroom downtown.
George Maloof, owner of the Palms, has announced that an 8,000-square-foot recording studio will be built as part of the hotel's expansion project. The venture of Maloof Music, a partnership between the Maloof family and Interscope Records, will be the first recoding studio incorporated into a casino resort.
Ashley Revell, a 32-year-old Londoner, sold all his belongings including his clothes, rented a tux and bet his life's savings -- about $138,000 -- on a single spin of the roulette wheel at the Plaza on Easter Sunday. A film crew from Britain's Sky One television taped the live event and will follow Revell for a month for a reality series called "Double or Nothing." The result was luck on his side... he won and that's the reality of it all!

Las Vegas' major fundraising wine tasting event UNLVino is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year when the sipping takes place on Saturday, May 1 in the Event Center at Bally's. This week comedian John Caponera, star of his own sitcom "The Good Life" and host of Comedy Central's "Jocks" sports show, is headlining the Riviera Comedy Club. Funny man John Pardon will be featured next week beginning on Monday, April 26.
The Comedy Stop at the Tropicana will have Tim Walkoe as the lead comedian, April 26-May 2. Walkoe was the mayor of "Small Town X," the scene of Fox Network's reality-drama show "Murder in Small Town X." The show was a fictional "who-done-it" where real people engaged with actors in an improvisational drama.
Both comedy clubs book three different comedians weekly.
Auditions with independent film director Tom Logan, who is searching for talent for upcoming projects, will be held at John Robert Powers in Las Vegas on April 24 and 25. Logan has worked as an actor, director, acting instructor, university professor, dialogue coach, and author. He began acting in TV specials and commercials in the 1970s, had starring roles in numerous films and on soap operas and headed the TV/Film and Commercial Acting departments of The American Film Institute (1981-88) and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (1980-87).
