Former President Jimmy Carter was in Las Vegas recently to promote his new book, an autobiography entitled "An Hour Before Daylight." He enjoyed an evening of activities at Caesars Palace beginning with dinner at Caesars Magical Empire.
After dinner, he and former first lady Rosalyn took in the magic shows in the Magical Empires showrooms. Slight-of-hand artist Apollo Robbins really did a number when he pick-pocketed the accompanying Secret Service agents.
Their last stop at the resort was Cafe Lago where they visited personal friend, Caesars' pianist David Osborne, dubbed "pianist to the presidents." A 35-member children's choir added to the evening by singing "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," the U.S. Navy hymn and Mr. Carter's favorite song.
It's difficult to be in Las Vegas right now without being aware that the remake of the Rat Pack movie "Oceans 11" is filming all about town especially at MGM Mirage properties. The plot revolving around a daring casino robbery has Bellagio as the hit place.
The movie's much talked about cast has a few Oscar winners. The cast includes co-producer George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts. The film's director is this year's double Oscar-nominee and winner Steven Soderbergh.
The trade magazine "Tradeshow Weekly" has listed Las Vegas as the top U.S. convention city. Las Vegas properties leased 17.6 million square feet for convention business last year, giving the city a 17 percent share of the U.S. convention market. The Las Vegas Convention Center is currently under construction for a $150 million South Hall expansion, which will bring their exhibit space to about 2 million square feet.
Construction has begun on a third golf course at the $5 billion Lake Las Vegas Resort. The unnamed, 18-hotel, par 72 course is being built on about 180 acres at the entrance of the resort and should be open in the summer of 2002.
Blue Man Group's Grammy-nominated debut album "Audio" is the number one selling CD in the Las Vegas area according to the Soundscan report ending the week of March 18. It has consistently been one of Las Vegas' top 10 selling albums since its debut in December 1999.
"Audio" is also a weekly fixture in the Top 20 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. In addition, "Audio" was recently released in the new DVD Audio 5.1 Surround Sound format.
It's been two years since jazz legend Joe Williams passed away. A fundraising concert in his honor is scheduled for 3 p.m. on April 29 at the Aladdin's Blue Note jazz club with Marlena Shaw and Jack Jones as headliners and William's main man, Johnny Pate, and Vince Falcone leading an all-star band. The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield return to The Orleans with their "Unchained Melody" from May 2-13. Another hit tune for the duo, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," was part of the "Top Gun" soundtrack which gave another old hit song a new beginning.
Local resident Robert Ben became Las Vegas' newest millionaire on March 30, when he hit the jackpot at Caesars Palace while playing a $500 Triple-Diamond slot machine. Caesars Palace awarded Las Vegas' first million-dollar slot jackpot on Aug. 14, 1983. Ben's win marked the 20th million-dollar-plus slot machine jackpot win at the famed casino.
Blink-182, Papa Roach and Run DMC are set to headline radio station KXTE-FM's concert on May 12 at Sam Boyd Stadium. Eleven other bands are on the bill for "Our Big Concert 4." They are Static X, Monster Magnet, Taproot, Nonpoint, New found Glory, Fear Factory, Systematic and the Las Vegas bands Phatter Than Albert, Left Standing, Excon and Joynt Chiefs.

The fourth annual ArtFest of Henderson fine arts festival scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 12-13, will be expanded this year along downtown Henderson's Water Street. The event will feature between 210 and 220 artists, two food concession areas, and three entertainment stages. Henderson is located about ten miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
The "Crazy Girls Fantasy Revue" at the Riviera has visited "Neptune," not the planet, but Japan's version of "Saturday Night Live." In April, over two million viewers in Japan will see the Harley-Davidson inspired opening of "Crazy Girls" on Saturday night television as they performed it in front of the "NO, Ifs ANDs or_" statue at the Riviera.
Popular singer impressionist Bob Anderson is performing in the Las Vegas Hilton's NightClub nightly except Monday at 8 p.m. through April 22. A six-piece band, conducted by legendary pianist and former Frank Signature bandleader Vinnie Falcone accompanies him. His 90-minute show takes audiences on a musical journey of the last 50 years with all-new tributes and medleys ranging from jazz to pop to rock 'n roll. Tickets are $28, call 702-732-5575.
