Comedienne Brett Butler will be performing 7 and 9 p.m. shows at the River Palms on March 29 and 30. Tickets are $20 with a players club card and $25 without a card. For information, call 1-800-835-7904.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Georgia, Butler has been dubbed "a Southern Lenny Bruce." After beginning with an Open Mike Night, she made her first adventure out of the South by loading up her 1969 Grand Pirx and driving to New York City. Two years later, she performed for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show" and went on to appear as a guest star or performer on more than 70 series and specials before landing her own one-woman show, "Brett Butler: The Child Ain't Right."

Twelve years of talking about her life onstage paid off with a starring role on ABC television's "Grace Under Fire."

The first Laughlin Mile Dragon Boat Festival is planned for May 11. People interested in participating need to ender and prepare for competition.

Dragon boats are 1,200 pound Hong Kong Style boats with a dragon head and a tail constructed of solid teakwood. It will be a team event with organizers expecting more than 30 corporate and community teams challenging each other.

Teams consist of at least 20 paddlers, with a minimum of eight female and eight male paddlers, a stearperson provide by the festival, plus a drummer and three alternates. The race is over a one-mile course on the Colorado River.

During the one-day festival, each team will have two timed heats. Mandatory practices will be held prior to the festival day. Registration deadline is May 1. Team sponsorship is $1,000 with all proceeds going to the Children's Miracle Network. Call 1-888-670-4222 for registration kits and full details.

Singer, songwriter and producer Smokey Robinson will appear at Harrah's Rio Vista Outdoor Amphitheater on April 7. Robinson recorded classics such as "Shop Around," "Ooh, Baby, Baby," "Tears of A Clown," and "Tracks of My Tears." Sawyer Brown will bring an upbeat show to the Flamingo Laughlin's Outdoor Amphitheater on March 30.

The Kelly J Band will launch seven consecutive weekends of outdoor concerts in the Colorado Belle's Center Circle Events Area on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30. High-energy singer, Kelly J has performed at major country music venues and state fairs in Colorado, Wyoming Arizona and Nevada. The repertoire includes classic country tunes with some yodeling, Top 40 and original tunes.

The Colorado Belle's free Center Circle concerts run from 5 to 10 p.m. (Nevada time). Beer, wine and soft drinks will be sold both days and stadium food will be sold on Saturday.

The ongoing free speakers program at the Ramada Express highlighting American veterans involved from WWII to Desert Storm is held at 1 p.m. in the Pavilion.

The lineup in April begins with George McDonald on Tuesday, April 2. At 11 years old, the son of missionaries in the Philippines during WWII, McDonald and his parents hid from the Japanese for six months. They were captured by the Japanese and placed in a prison camp.

On Tuesday, April 9, Vice Admiral Albert H. Konetzni, Jr. will talk. He assumed his current duties as Deputy and Chief of Staff U.S. Atlantic Fleet on May 4, 2001. He'll be addressing the submarine veterans of WWII.

Frank Burlanek was with the Armed Guard from 1941 to 1947. He was home on leave when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Burlanek served aboard a Norwegian tanker, and when it sank, a shrimp boat picked him up. Later, he served on ships transporting German prisoners to Africa. He'll be talking on Tuesday, April 16.

Part of the Ramada Express honoring American veterans program is the free museum in the Pavilion dthat has military and home front memorabilia, vintage radio programs, 1940s fashions, products, art and history. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
